Overview

This case study examines the potential of CMYK 2D matrix encoding to enhance QR code customization and efficiency, surpassing limitations of traditional black-and-white encoding.

Problem Statement

Traditional QR codes are limited in their customisability and efficiency due to their reliance on black-and-white encoding schemes. This restricts their applicability in scenarios requiring high customisation or efficient data representation. Therefore, there is a need for an alternative encoding method that can address these limitations while maintaining QR code compatibility and readability.

  • Assessing the feasibility of embedding binary pairs within CMYK colour channels.

  • Investigating the impact of variable error correction mechanisms on QR code robustness and reliability.

  • Exploring the potential utilisation of Huffman encoding for data compression and optimisation.

User Research

  • Insight: Users generally preferred the CMYK QR code format over black and white, finding it more interesting and satisfying to create. However, they perceived it as an unnecessary distraction in certain contexts and found it difficult to implement into design.
