Overview

Various works for the NHS Security Department during my 4 years working there.

Problem Statement

I encountered many issues while at the NHS. I was in charge of all ID design and production, campaign designs and any other odd jobs that came my way. There is a severe lack of design consciousness in the NHS, and deep inefficiencies that I attempted to solve with various logistical adjustments and administrative work.

Objectives

  • Streamline workflows I was involved in.

  • Promote a strong departmental image.

  • Highlight and work on any other problems I identified.

User Research

User research here is a bit broad. Although I did conduct research into users of the NHS during development of the security poster campaign, I ultimately fell under direction of management and the decisions they made.

In lieu of any interesting statistics, here's an image of my with some colleagues during my time there.

Learnings

  • Professional Environment: Although I had done years of design work prior, this was the first professional environment that demanded work of that nature from me. Meeting strict deadlines and creating work that quickly went into public consumption from one of the most trusted and reputable institutions in the world was eye opening.

  • The Importance of Statistics: One thing I had previously underappreciated was the impact statistics can have on a project. Justification of any decision comes down to statistics, so I was sure to gather whatever data I had access to in order to present informed decisions to management.

  • Passionate Service: I am proud to have worked at the NHS, despite its faults. I owe a lot of who I am to the place, namely the awakening of passion for work that I otherwise would have no second thoughts about.
